Course Overview
SHS Band:
This course is designed for all students who want to explore and grow their instrumental musical abilities in a fun, supportive group environment. No prior experience is necessary—just a passion for playing an instrument!
Throughout the year, you’ll learn the fundamentals of ensemble performing, music theory, sight-reading, and technique specific to your instrument. We will play a wide variety of musical styles, including pop, classical, folk, and musical theater/film music. You’ll also learn how to work effectively as part of a team, build confidence, and perform in front of an audience.
SHS HONORS Band:
Held during the same class period as SHS Band, this course allows students to earn honors credit by completing additional coursework outside of class. Students in Honors Band still participate in all standard SHS Band events and classwork.
Performance & Learning Opportunities
- Parades: We will perform in two parades in September as part of our marching band unit – the Four Town Fair Parade and the Big E Parade.
- Veterans Day Assembly Performance: This special performance honors our veterans and gives us an early opportunity to showcase our hard work.
- Three Official Concerts: We will have concerts in the fall, winter, and spring. These performances are a great way to celebrate our progress and share our music with the community.
- Musical Learning Opportunities: In addition to our concerts, there will be optional opportunities to participate in school-wide events, community performances, and workshops. These will be announced throughout the year.
- (HONORS Band only) Extended Learning Opportunities: This course includes a requirement for extended learning. This may involve participation in music festivals, solo and small ensemble performances, or preparing a special project on a musical topic of your choice.
